An apartment building in the east of the Netherlands, near the German border, is destined for demolition. It is the birthplace of the eccentric Henk, who, sixty years later, still lives there. If you desire nothing else, you are already living in paradise. Henk spends his days on a small stool in his kitchen, listening to pirate radio stations—music that transports him back to a bygone era. The building, once vibrant and defined by its post-war architecture, now stands deserted. As former residents revisit shared memories and reflect upon the past, Henk resists the inevitable.

The film deals with the move from the capital of Piauí to Oeiras in 1852, the ideas of modernity at the time and the problems that resulted from this process in people and in the city. Along with the idea of progress of the railway, factories and steamboats, many families and workers were relocated from the central areas of the city to more distant parts. CONTACT is a short documentary film directed by Jonathan Walley that chronicles the transformation of an entire skatepark into a playable musical instrument—where the skate, BMX, art, and music scenes collide. HCS has been many things: a skatepark, gallery, library, museum, and stage; but, for one weekend, Derek Nelson fabricator, activist, BMX pro, and artist, transformed his skatepark into an immersive sonic installation—part instrument, part playground—for the community of Binghamton, NY to become co‑creators in a conflagration of sound. SMALL TOWN, BIG SOUND. CONTACT reminds us of the joy in creativity, community, and the DIY spirit. Contact is about pushing boundaries, experimenting with art, and reclaiming space in an increasingly cruel, unkind, and oppressive world. It’s a poetic exploration of the creative process told by a filmmaker who calls HCS home.
